Congratulations to Scott Ram (Senior Boy), Harry Culpin (Intermediate Boy) and to Luca Michalowski (Junior Boy) who have qualified for the Schools national Final on 15/16 Sept in Bedford.  There were consistent performances from Scott (who finished 3rd) as well as new PBs (Harry achieving 7 PBs and finishing 4th; and Luca achieving his best Pentathlon score and a 6th place).

We wish them every success and they are testament to the commitment they have put into their training and competitions. Once again our County has individuals who have qualified (last year it was the girls). This is only our third year of competition and we are delighted for the Team Manager, John Ellis and for the county schools.

We had a great spirit in our Junior Girls team (this was our only team entry) - see the photo above (courtesy of P Hayden)

Junior girls: This was our only complete team – well done to all three girls, their schools, clubs and coaches.  The team of Charli Sampson, April Seaton and Mar Ruiz Monserrat are relatively new to combined events but all 3 showed a lot of promise and we expect an improved set of positions for next year. Charli (finishing 11th) and Mar (finishing 20th) had two PBs in their five events; April had three PBs, a new Pentathlon PB and was our highest placed girl in this age group with her 9th position.

For the first time we had a potential team of senior girls who could have qualified as a team – but Sophie Domingo is now also pursuing her football career, Charlotte Ellis is still injured and Neve Grimes has qualified for the English Schools individual hurdles event and has focused on that event – all three had qualified in previous years for the Combined Events Final and would have easily qualified again this year.

Injury affected many other athletes and so we were not able to progress much further in the other age groups:

For the record these athletes were also entered in the competition:

Eilidh Maclean (Inter Girls) – new to the event and should be proud of her steady performance and overall 9th position

Lily Gregory (Inter Girls) – a qualifier in 2017 but was unable to complete both days.

Will Parry (Inter Boys) – competed last year, but carried an injury and was unable to complete both days.

Nathan Gookey (Inter Boys) – new to the event but was injured and did not compete at all.

Beth Pugh and Grace Pugh (Inter Girls) – competed as late entry guests and their results are not on the website

Leics & Rutland County Schools Championships - Leicester 9th June 2018

Every year we are asked questions about the County Schools championships. We have decided to include here a copy of the programme (which will have been sent to all PE teachers). This will allow you to check the area to which your son or daughter belongs (see back page) - because you will need to report to the designated area in the spectator stand when you arrive; it also included the timetable of events; it also includes the rules regarding heat to qualification finals for the track; finally there is information about the age groups (which are different from mainstream athletics age groups). It includes the selection policy for the English Schools competition in July. We hope this is useful. Please try to do your bit to save the planet - so only print out the pages that you need.

Selection policy for the English Schools championships in July

The selection policy contains important information which needs to be read BEFORE the county schools championships on 9th June

Combined Events Schools Regional Competition 2018

CE Regional Rounds : 23rd / 24th June (Junior Boys 23rd, Junior Girls 24th, older age groups on both days) Princess Royal Arena, Boston

Please contact your County Team Manager, John Ellis for information. Contact the Schools Secretary Alan Maddison if you need more information. The closing date for the submission of teams is 5th June. Do not wait until the County Schools Champs on 9th June - because it will be too late.

CE Final : 15th / 16th September, Bedford

Primary - Yr 5/6/7 - Cross Country

England Athletics is continuing to support the Cross Country Year 5/6/7 Finals in Leicestershire

Please see below a message from John Skevington, Event Director of this event.  If you have any queries about this event please contact John using the email address below.

Following a highly successful switch to Prestwold Hall near Loughborough in 2017 the national school year 5/6/7 final will again take place at the same venue on Saturday March 24th 2018 and as before will be free to enter.

England Athletics are as before supporting the event which will feature again a 12m screen to showcase the live stream from the course. The whole event will be shown live across the world through a live stream on the internet which will certainly extend the big occasion feeling.

Teams last year came from all points of the country, stretching from North of the Tyne to Cornwall.

This year the competition is being opened up to clubs who, as long as they don’t take athletes from any regional team, are invited to bring squads for the school year 5/6/7 events

Event director John Skevington commented “ With there being some areas who do not take part in the final I have had lots of requests from clubs wanting to bring teams and this year, now that the event is established we have decided to extend the invitation. The only criteria is that they don’t cross over and take athletes from existing teams."

Stepping Stone to English Schools

The year 7 races have been very much welcomed as a stepping stone to for the next school year where many of the better athletes will be aiming for qualification for the English schools finals. It is very much hoped that this early taste of big event environment will serve well those looking to stay in the sport.

The whole of the 2017 events can be viewed on http://www.runjumpthrow.com/fixtures/12014-primary-and-year-7-national-schools-cross-country-final-2017

Leicestershire & Rutland Secondary schools 2017 - Five new records set

Your county association wants to focus on the Leics & Rutland Secondary Schools Association Championships

This website is pleased to support the schools and their county championships. The results from Saturday June 10th are now uploaded on the link on the Schools page. We extend our congratulations to the following athletes for setting new records at the Championships:

Intermediate Boys 2000m Walks - Ben Allen won his event in a time of 9:23.9 - beating a 20 year old record set in 1996 ! Well done Ben Allen.

Intermediate Boys 400m Hurdles - Ben Higgins from the Rutland Area schools took Lloyd Gumbs 2002 record in a new time of 55.30s

There were three new records in the Senior category:

Laura Mullin (North Leics) in a time of 2:13.8 for her 800m; Rowan Powell (West Leicester) continued his record-breaking long jump with 7.22m; and Lucy Jones (Hugglescote) set a new 1500m record in a time of 4:44.8

ESAA Combined Events 2017

There were mixed emotions and results for the three individual Leicestesrshire school qualfiers in Boston

You can find the full results on this link: https://www.esaa.net/v2/2017/ce/ceres2017.pdf

Sadly Sophie Domingo was injured and did not go. Charlotte Ellis had a recurrence of the calf injury and pulled out after the hurdles.

That left just one Leics athlete - Neve Grimes (Intermediate Girls) who steadily made her way from 34th to 28th during the competition.

There is a chance that all three young women will be in a Senior Team next year - if they are all injury free then this is looking good for the future.

Congratulations to Sophie Domingo (Beauchamp College) and Lily Gregory (Sir Jonathan North/Beauchamp College) - in their first ESAA National Combined Events competition.

Leics & Rutland Schools should be proud to have two athletes in the National Champs in only the second year of competition for the schools. Last year there was one athlete.

Not Selected for the Leicestershire & Rutland team Schools Team?

Message from ESAA (English Schools Athletic Association)

Over 1700 athletes are entered in the National Championships each year, but at least 2 or 3 times that number will probably be disappointed not to have been selected. PLEASE don't contact us to complain that someone didn't make your County team. Team selection is entirely in the hands of each County Team Manager and the ESAA has no say in how or why teams are selected as they are. Sorry...but ESAA simply cannot respond to hundreds of e-mails - please read the FAQ page on the ESAA website which answers all the frequently asked questions.

In particular, please note that teams are strictly limited in the number of athletes they can select, and that ESAA entry standards are for guidance to team selectors - they are not trigger points for automatic selection.

English Schools Combined Events - Regional Round 27/28 June 2015

Congratulations to the Junior Girls team for the second place in their first Regional competition (out of seven counties in the East Anglia region).

Conratulations to Scott Ram, Loughborough GS  (Inter Boys - 3210 points - 5th); Sophie Domingo, Beauchamp College (Inter Girls - 3697 points - 4th); Charlotte Ellis, Welland Park Academy (Junior Girls - 2561 points - 6th); Ellie Haynes, Hastings High (junior Girls - 2397 points - 10th); and Millie Shaw, Ashby Ivanhoe College (Junior Girls - 2427 points - 8th).

Charlotte Ellis (Harborough AC) has qualified as an individual in the National ESAA Schools Combined Events Championships on 19/20 September in Bedford - well done Charlotte!

Please note that the Leics Schools Committee has asked us to point out that the entries were not submitted formally by the Leics Schools committee - the Chairman has asked that this be noted on the Leics and Rutland AA website alongside these results in order that there is no mistake by the reader in assuming that the athletes were selected by the Leics committee to represent the Leics Schools.

[For information: a window of opportunity opened about 7 days prior to the closing date for Leicestershire athletes to be entered directly into their Regional competition. Prior to this the Leics Schools AGM had felt unable to enter a team for several years. All known (via Power of 10) Combined Events Leics athletes were therefore contacted to see who would wish to take advantage of this opportunity provided through the English Schools National Coordinator. The 5 athletes listed were those able to attend - it was not a selection process and there had been no intention to suggest otherwise. The website feels that the achievements of these five athletes in a very competitive regional competition should not be devalued because of their unconventional route into the competition - it was known and accepted by ESAA that they were not a team selected by the Leics Schools committee - there has been no intention to suggest otherwise.]

Leics County Schools Selection Policy for the English Schools Track & Field Champs

We have been sent the following information about the 2015 Selection Policy for the team for the English Schools competition. This is important in terms of the athlete competing at the County Schools Championships on 13th June. There would be different arrangements for Walks events.

April 2015

Consideration for selection for places on the Leicestershire and Rutland Schools Athletics Association representative team for the English Schools Championships on the 10th and 11th July 2015 is very dependent on an athlete’s performance at the Leicestershire and Rutland Schools Track and Field Championships.  (Athletes are EXPECTED to compete at the County Schools Championships and any athlete unable to compete at the championships should notify the team manager preferably before the day with an explanation of why they cannot compete as well as their details and the event they wish to be considered for.) Athletes who wish to be considered for selection for the pole vault or hammer events should forward their details to the team manager before the 13th June.

Times, distances and heights achieved at other meetings recognized by UKA, AA of England, MCAA and Leicestershire and Rutland Athletics Association will be taken into consideration by the selection committee but these MUST be performances which are registered on the power of ten website.

Achieving qualifying times, distance and heights does NOT automatically guarantee selection.  Other factors will be taken into account.  Should it be found an athletes performance has been falsified they may not be selected in future years if they subsequently qualify.

The selection committee will select their team immediately after the County Schools Championships and all written support of performances should have been given to the team manager before the end of the CountyTrack and Field Championships.  An athlete will not be considered for selection if the necessary evidence has not been received to support their submitted performance.  Early notification of an athlete’s performance would be appreciated.  Athletes who are close to qualifying standards are also welcome to submit evidence of performances that are close to the entry standards. Any spaces remaining on the team following the selection meeting will be allocated to the first athletes who achieve the entry standard.

Athletes who think they might be considered for selection are encouraged to register their availability for county selection on line via the ESAA website and fill in their own details.  This may include – Age group, event, first name, surname, school name, school town, Club (if any), coach, DOB ( with strict controls), current season best performance.  More information can be found on the English Schools website www.esaa.net

Yours faithfully
