Changes to Saffron Lane Athletics Track infield - The Meeting

Your county association has received the following message from Andrew Beddow (he is the Head of Sports Services at Leicester City Council - but the email does not say that).

He invites all key clubs and users to a consultation meeting to share plans, drawings and timescales. It appears that these have also been shared already with England Athletics who will also be represented at the meeting.

WE DO NOT KNOW WHO HAS BEEN SENT THIS EMAIL BUT IT IS CLEARLY IMPORTANT THAT ALL USERS OF THE TRACK ARE NOTIFIED. THE EMAIL ONCE AGAIN ASSUMES THAT THE INFIELD IS NOT IN USE ON A REGULAR BASIS AND SEEKS TO MAXIMISE INCOME AND USE AT SUCH TIMES. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING DEBATE FOR ATHLETICS AND IT IS VITAL THAT YOU ENSURE YOU AND YOUR VIEWS ARE REPRESENTED AT THE MEETING. IT MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE TO PREVENT THIS CHANGE - BUT IT IS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT THE CHANGES HAVING DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES FOR FIELD EVENT COMPETITIONS AND TRAINING AND FOR THE QUALITY OF THE THROWING AND JUMPING AREAS. IT IS ALSO VITAL TO ENSURE THAT ATHLETICS TRAINING IS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

For many years members of your association have asked the council to be aware of the timescales for voluntary organisations when setting up meetings, especially for important consultations. Despite this the email gives less than two weeks notice (with a bank holiday in the middle) for this meeting. Schools use this facility - but are on holiday still. This is not the first time this has happened and coaches, athletes, schools and club members should be aware that the consequences of these changes will have a huge impact on athletics in the city and the county. Make your views known at this meeting.

HERE IS THE EMAIL:

Dear Clubs and users of Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium,

The Council recognises the important role that Saffron Lane Athletics Track plays both within the City and County and you may be aware Sports Services are currently working in partnership with both UK Athletics and England Athletics to improve the infield. The work aims to improve the infield of the track so that we are able to maximise the use of the infield for other sports when it is not being used by athletics. At this stage we would like to invite the key clubs and users to a consultation meeting on Tuesday 4th September 2018. This will allow us to share the proposed plans, drawings and timescales with you.  Representatives from England Athletics will also be in attendance and we would very much like to hear your views and gather your feedback. The details of the meeting are as follows:

 Date: Tuesday 4th September 2018

Time: 18:00-19:00

Venue: Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium Pavilion - 1st floor meeting room.

We are keen to ensure that the infield improvements are undertaken with your input to ensure the improvements are entirely complementary to athletics. The Council has been able to secure investment to undertake this important work and we feel quite strongly that this will make this valued facility more attractive allowing it to accommodate other sports and activities without it compromising the existing and future use for athletics. By doing so we increase the impact and overall viability of this facility going forward.

Confirmation of attendance is not required, however we do ask that all clubs ensure that there is committee representation. If this proves difficult then please do let me know. The event will be open to everyone so club members and general users are also welcome to attend.

Kind regards

 Andrew Beddow
